Site archéologique de la Gaufresenque

Visite.org 12100 Millau (Aveyron)
At the Gallo-Roman time, Condatomagus (the ancient name of Millau) was known as a market city. Excavations in the alluvial plain of Graufesenque enabled archaeologists to find a huge area of pottery shops. It had already been attested that the place was occupied from the 2nd century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D. and it is now known that most of those 500 workshops date back to the 1st century of our era. The development of pottery industry was made easier by the presence and the exploitation of a fine clay near the Graufesenque site. The distinctive characteristic of that pottery is that it is cast or sigillated and then glazed. The evolution of face patterns enables us to distinguish seven periods ranging from years 10-20 of our era to the beginning of the 4th century. Graufesenque vases were exported in the 1st century to the whole Roman Empire, to eastern Mediterranean countries and even as far as the Baltic Sea.
